Beached: A Commonplace Book marks an ongoing questioning by choreographer Rosemary Lee and writer-observer Niki Pollard into the little understood skills and experiences of dance-makers.

Caught in the covers is the dust of images, hunches and memories that Rosemary used to make Beached, but which have been swept clean from the work as performed. By reflecting on the making of one work, a second work has emerged that is a subtle shadow of the first.

The book is composed of extracts and annotations from Rosemary and Niki's studio notebooks on the making of the dance work Beached. The result is a series of thoughts and notes as they occur to choreographer and observer, as well as further reflection of process. Beached: A Commonplace Book is an unusual and subtle collection of prose, poetry and images that illuminates the choreographer's creative process.
