Richard Layzell – Notes from the air

Day 37: Tuesday 28 October 03

1. Practicals and Methods 2. Intuitions and insights 3. Freeflow 4. Tania’s view
Malay street-café breakfast with Lee Wen and Alistair Maclennan [recently arrived], discussing other Asian live art events in Bangkok and Japan. And intricacies of a possible event in Singapore, where visiting artists may face many restrictions [political, religious, sexual content, nudity], but maybe all the more need for it to happen here [my view].

Reflections on the log, on flight SQ320 to Heathrow:
Expected to miss entries here and there. But regularity became an essential ingredient. The four questions / headings were enough. Having different roles over this period – facilitator / maker / director / performer – isn't so much of an issue. It's how each informs the other.
Interconnectivity of people and events over these 37 days has been a real ingredient:
i.e. Sarah Miller [TPS2 curator] Wagga Wagga then Perth, Mike Nanning [TPS2 artist] WW then Perth, Rosie Dennis [TPS2 artist] WW then Perth [performed in Eleanor's Falcon and in the NRLA], Cat Hope [TPS2 artist] WW then Perth [performed in NRLA], Michelle Outram [TPS2 artist] WW then Sydney [at Performance Space], Alistair Maclennan [NRLA artist] Perth then Singapore, Lee Wen [NRLA 04 artist] Singapore then Glasgow.

Interconnectivity of thinking, links:

i. previous works ['architecture of belief', etc.]
ii. intuitions [bridge video sequence, vocal collaboration]
iii. pre-prepared ideas
iv. improvisation / here and now
v. late decisions made re. pressure of deadlines ['opp of cleaning' video]
vi. people
vii. capacity / head-space
viii. compulsion

Realisation that Lucy, landlady at the Swan River Lodge [where we all stayed], played a key role in making NRLA in Perth a success for the visiting artists – kayaks, loaning her laptop, barbecues, fires, open house, attending events, general banter, etc.
On the long flight, worked on copy for the new perf for NRLA 04 in March. It's overdue. Had struggled to focus until Perth was performed. Many thoughts, much of it maybe jetlag-drivel: “interior space as metaphor … learn some Mandarin … integrate video as documentation … write it … everything as/is movement … 3 bikes … ” It'll look different again from London. You're in perpetual travel mode.

Now, for Christ's sake, can't you give it a rest and let me watch the in-flight movies?
