Richard Layzell – Notes from Wagga Wagga

Day 7: Sunday 28 Sept 03

  1. Practicals and Methods 2. Intuitions and insights
An afternoon symposium-event with 6 guest speakers [mainly from Sydney] on 2 panels discussing inter-cultural and hybrid practice. The change of format – listening, then question-time – made its mid-way mark in the programme and impacted on collective consciousness.

An impromptu evening of improvised duets and occasional solos. I played the piano, straight from an episode in the Nosh House during the second silent walk on Day 2. Then some sophisticated VJ-ing, which was technology as peacock.
A morning off. What does ‘off’ mean in a process like this, when every interaction makes its contribution to the bigger project? When your head is
so immersed that you don’t notice you’ve been stopped by the police for not wearing a helmet?

Occasionally I get the sense of ok-ness that everything over these two weeks is feeding into everything else and everyone else, and that the inevitability of this is inextricably allied to the creative process itself.

Then at the time of sleep an unexpected surge of images and actions that could form part of the performance in Perth in a few weeks. The bridge, a sound sequence. And the excitement creates its own sleepless certainty. Familiar feeling, long gone.
