Richard Layzell – Tania’s Space
Commissioned for Firstsite in Colchester UK, this installation explored the actuality of artistic process and brought a key future collaborator into being.

Four adjoining artists’ studios arranged as an intersecting gloss-white sculptural form, with dividing screens, tables and seating integrated into the formal design aesthetic.

Each studio space represented a different artist and discipline: David Lethaby sculpture in wood, Rashna Patel painting and print, Kevin Dutton photography and video, Tania Koswycz text and assemblage. They were all fictitious and slightly iconic.

After creating their biographies and personal statements I made the entirety of their artwork. And thus a strong connection with Tania unfolded, as I discovered her work was so easy for me to produce.

The audience became visitors to an ‘open studio’ event and were invited to participate in an aspect of each artist’s work. You could edit a section of Kevin’s video, combine MDF fragments with David’s PVA glue, collate Rashna’s fabric samples, contribute to Tania’s Ideas Book.
