| Errollyn's dedication to Gina Scott | ||||
| I first met Gina Scott in 1999 when I returned to Belize for the first time since leaving as a baby.
Gina founded and runs the Belize School of Music and is an authority on the many indigenous forms of Belize music. Indeed, there’s very little that Gina doesn’t know about the political and social structure of this beautiful and unique country which is undergoing so many changes. Through her I’ve met those involved in the national newspapers, television, radio and in the government. On my subsequent trip in 2000 we began to hatch plans as to how I could become more involved in the musical life of Belize. These plans culminated in my leading composition workshops in November 2003 with her pupils (who decided to call themselves The Fusicians) and we gave a concert at the University of West Indies to a packed audience. Music provision in Belize is mainly the reserve of prosperous parents and Gina and I would dearly like to change that. It was in November in Belize that I started work on All The Blues I See and it was March 2004 when I was next in Belize (to take part in a concert performing with Gina to open the Bliss Centre for Performing Arts.) that I gave her the printed score which I’d dedicated to her. Gina Scott is a remarkable woman and her family mean so much to me and have extended so much love and generosity to this prodigal Wallen. |
